Fabrication of porous ZnO-based photoelectrodes forward high efficiency in photoelectrochemical water splitting

Photoelectrodes consisting of various porous ZnO films were fabricated and studied in photoelectrochemical cell (PEC). Spherical voids were inserted into the nanoparticle ZnO film by using Polystyrene spheres (PS) as sacrificial templates with the expected to utilize as light scattering centers for enhanced light absorption in visible region of solar spectrum as well as easy electrolyte infiltration throughout the entire thickness. This also was beneficial to effective sensitize ZnO film with CdS nanocrystalline for more efficient visible-light absorption due to large pore diameter produce by spherical voids. The results of UV-Vis spectrum revealed that visible-light absorption was enhanced to ~99% at 800nm wavelength. Photoelectrochemical properties were carried out with the electrodes. It showed a highest photon-to-electron conversion efficiencies of 0.8% with ZnO (PS: 8.5 wt %) electrode and 5.7 % with CdS-sensitization of ZnO (PS: 16 wt %) electrode under a solar simulator (AM 1.5, 100 mA/Cm2). It is the highest value reported so far among electrodes based on ZnO and CdS/ZnO.
