Towards single molecule surface enhanced Raman scattering

We present a new nanofabrication technology that uses
self-directed film growth on a template surface to form continuous large aspect ratio metal nanowires with
controllable separation nanogaps with dimensions down to about 5 nm, and total nanogap length density
~1 km cm-2. We have fabricated both Au and Ag nanostructure array surfaces and have conducted
extensive characterization of the dimensions and cross-sectional shape using high resolution scanning
electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Reflection spectroscopy is used to demonstrate the
tunability of the nanogap dimensions and the uniformity of the array dimensions over large areas and
Raman spectroscopy is used to show that nanogap electromagnetic enhancements greater than 108 are
produced.
We are interested in the measurement of non-resonant single molecule SERS and are currently
conducting experiments with pyridine and d5-pyridine as bianalyte partners to assess the detection limit of
the nanostructured surfaces. We will present the details of the new nanostructured metal surfaces and the
latest measurements in the pursuit of non-resonant single molecule SERS spectra from pyridine.
