Enabling quantum technologies with micro-mechanical oscillators

Micro-mechanical oscillators have unique features that may allow them to assist in processing quantum information with superconducting electrical circuits. Specifically, they are high-Q, physically compact oscillators, whose interaction with electrical circuits can be rapidly modulated. Furthermore, mechanical oscillators can couple to other quantum systems--such as optical cavities--which do not couple directly to superconducting electrical circuits. Consequently, they may act either as long-lived and well-isolated quantum memories or as a quantum interfaces between light and electricity. In this talk, I will describe our progress in realizing these quantum applications of micro-mechanical motion.
