At the last Rencontres du Vietnam in Nanoscience in 2006 high precision measurements between different quantum Hall devices were presented by F.Schopfer et al which demonstrated that the quantized Hall resistance is universal at the level 1 part in 10*11 if different GaAs/AlGaAs devices are compared. In the same year a least square adjustment of fundamental constants published by the CODATA group demonstrated, that the quantized Hall resistance and the Josephson constant are exclusively determined by the fundamental constant h (Planck constant) and e (elementary charge) so that all electrical units can be represented by combinations of these fundamental constants. On this basis the General Conference on Weight and Measures recommended in 2011 a revision of our international system of units on the basis of fundamental constants. Such a new system may be implemented in 2016 if at least 3 independent laboratories confirm that not only electrical units but also the unit of mass (kilogram) can be realized on the basis of a fixed value for the Planck constant. The talk summarizes the impact of the QHE on this development.

In addition some recent results about the current distribution in quantum Hall devices and phenomena related to stripes and bubbles will be presented.
